A match which hung in the balance after two days had a swift and incredible denouement on the third as India swept to a eight-wicket win to level the series 1-1. Ahead by just 23 with one wicket in hand when play began, India stretched their lead to 60, and then made full use of a wearing pitch, bundling South Africa out for a meagre 121. The rest was a cinch.
After the assault with the bat in Chennai, Virender Sehwag hurt South Africa wit
h the ball on the third day of the third Test.
After regular bowlers failed to break through in the second session, India found an unlikely hero in Sehwag, who struck two deadly blows, dismissing the dangerous pair of Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis as the Proteas had reached 88-4 at tea in the Green Stadium here.
The visitors had managed a lead of 28 runs by the end of the post-lunch session.
Ashwell Prince on eight and AB de Villiers on six were in the middle.
After South Africa wiped out the 60-run deficit, MS Dhoni introduced Sehwag's gentle off-spin in the attack and on the very first ball the move paid off.

The second day of the third and deciding Test match between India and South
Africa at the Green Park stadium on Saturday was tepid to say the least.
But what mattered eventually was the fact that the home team got the lead, albeit just. Replying to the South African first innings total of 265, India ended the day on 288 for nine.
It wasn't exactly a see-saw battle on day one of the third and final Test but more of South Africa having India on the mat and then throwing it away. India bowled out South Africa for 265 just before stumps at the Green Park stadium here on Friday.
Considering the ominous signs India were subject to at the start of play, MS Dhoni will be relatively happy with his first day at office as India’s Test captain. India took one wicket in the first session, three in the second and six in the last to end the South African innings in 87.3 overs. Ishant Sharma and Harbhajan Singh took three wickets each.
